How Much Is A Tesla Solar Roof?

Tesla is known for being one of the most technologically innovative companies today.

They are most well known for their electric cars. Tesla brought electric cars to the masses when most automakers were still focused on their gas-powered vehicles. Now, due to the popularity of Tesla cars (and soaring gas prices), other automakers can’t jump on the electric car bandwagon fast enough.

But Tesla sells other things besides cool cars. In 2016, Tesla and SolarCity announced the launch of the Tesla solar roof, which they hoped would become the future solar system.

Five years later, people are still perplexed about what it is and how much it costs. Tesla seems to frequently change their thoughts – and pricing – for their solar roof, so the confusion is understandable.

But now, we will look at how much a Tesla solar roof costs in 2022.

How Much Is A Tesla Solar Roof?

The short answer to that is it depends. How much a Tesla solar roof costs depends on many factors.

However, to give you an idea, the costs of installing a Tesla solar roof ranges from $35,000 to over $80,000. Let us look at how much a Tesla solar roof costs based on different factors and what is included.

Active Solar Shingles

Installing active solar shingles costs $1.80 per watt. Tesla’sTesla’s active solar shingles are made of tempered glass and feature solar cells that produce power.

Each shingle is 15″ by 45″ and resembles a slate shingle. Tesla’sTesla’s solar shingles, according to Electrek, are 71.67 watts in size. On the other hand, Tesla does not publish any official power ratings on its website.

Inactive Solar Shingles

Tesla’sTesla’s inactive shingles do not include solar cells. Instead, they cover your roof like a standard shingle, allowing the active solar shingles to blend in with the rest. The inactive shingles are charged per square foot rather than per watt because they do not generate electricity.

Installing inactive solar shingles will cost between $15.30 and $21.27 per square foot. A 1,500-square-foot roof for inactive shingles alone will cost at least $22,950, but it might cost more if you have a multi-story roof or congested mounting planes.

Tesla Solar Inverter

A solar inverter is included in the cost of installing the whole system or the Powerwall as part of the package. This device, which contains safety features including integrated rapid shutdown, arc fault protection, ground fault protection, and no neutral cables, will be installed by Tesla.

Tesla Powerwall

Adding a Tesla Powerwall to your system will increase your total cost by $12,000 to $16,500. A Tesla Powerwall is included with all solar systems, including a Solar Roof, even if it is not strictly required. A Powerwall will cost roughly $8500 for the equipment alone in 2021, plus $4000 for installation.

The Complexity of the Roof

Tesla just proposed different installation prices based on the complexity of your roof. The rating, which is divided into simple, intermediate, and complex, is meant to reflect the complexity of installing a new roof on your home.

Replacement of the Roof

The Solar Roof should be built over a single-layer 3-tab asphalt or composition shingle roof that is under 20 years old. Any other roofing material or more complex building necessitates a complete roof replacement.

Solar Incentives

Federal or state-level incentives may reduce your final bill by a significant amount. These incentives are taken into account by the Tesla Solar Roof calculator. The Tesla website has a list of them as well.

While state incentives differ, any roof placed on a residential building will be eligible for a 30 percent Federal Tax Credit.
